Shift into Optimum Gear programming allows one-touch selection of the best gear for maximum acceleration or engine braking by holding the shift lever to the left of Drive for one second. Driver-selectable Comfort mode starts the vehicle moving in 2nd gear or a second Reverse gear, and upshifts at lower rpm, to help improve control on slippery surfaces.

Mercedes originally launched the CLK as a coupe in 1998 and added the convertible version a year later. A thoroughly updated second-generation coupe was introduced in 2003, with the new convertible added in 2004. For 2006, the former CLK320 has been replaced by the new CLK350, which features a new 268-hp 3.5L V-6 engine and a new 7-speed automatic transmission.
