Mercedes-Benz R-class
The R-Class evolved from the Grand Sports Tourer concept of 2000, and Mercedes said the production model didn't change much. Marketers promote the R-Class for its style, sophistication, luxury and spacious six-passenger capacity.
The stylish R-Class is a cross between a wagon and an SUV, which Mercedes-Benz calls a "sports tourer." Two new variants debut for 2007: a fuel-efficient, diesel-powered R320 CDI and a high-performance R63 AMG that packs a 507-hp V8. Both the V6-powered R350 and V8-equipped R500 carry over with few changes. All-wheel drive and seating for six in three rows are standard on every model.
Introduced for the 2006 model year, the automaker says the R-Class "grand sports tourer" is the company's first model to blend the merits of a sport utility vehicle, sports sedan and luxury wagon. In addition to the new AMG and CDI versions, two more trim levels are available: the R350, equipped with a V-6 engine; and the R500, powered by a V-8. A seven-speed automatic transmission works with an all-wheel-drive system. The R-Class rides more like a car rather than a lumbering SUV. It's well equipped with an array of comfort and convenience options available.
R-class Specification
Four models are offered. The R350 has a 268-hp V6, the R500 a 302-hp V8. New for '07 are the R320 CDI with a 215-hp diesel V6, and the R63 with a 507-hp V8. All have a 7-speed automatic transmission; E63 adds manual-shift steering wheel buttons. All Rs have all-wheel drive without low-range gearing.
Diesel and high-performance models join the larger of Mercedes' two midsize SUVs for 2007. R-Class shares its basic structure with Mercedes' ML-Class SUV, but seats six instead of five and is 12 inches longer in wheelbase and 15 inches longer overall.
ABS and traction/antiskid control are standard. Front side airbags, rear side airbags, and curtain side airbags that cover all three seating rows are standard. Seating is in a 2-2-2 arrangement, with folding 2nd-row buckets and a folding 50/50 split 3rd-row bench. Standard for R63, optional otherwise, are leather upholstery, navigation system, load-leveling suspension, and Mercedes Tele Aid assistance.
